Gothnic FAQ

Quenching your thirst for knowledge about silly things - a F.A.Q. on the event known as the Gothnic.

Q: WHY?
A:  well it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Q:  How did this all get started?
A:  When the sfgoth-l@necronomi.com list first began (early 1997), folks wanted to meet face to face.  Those who went clubbing regularly met each other at the clubs.  Eventually there became a need for listies to meet outside of a club environment to accommodate parents, working folks, etc.  In the interests of those folks a picnic was proposed for the non-night owl set.  About twenty people showed up, brought food and had a great time.  There are even photos documenting the carnage!

Q:  Why aren't you having the gothnic in the usual Dutch Windmill area?
A:  Because we'll get kicked out like last time.  Besides, we have reservations for an excellent picnic spot this time!

Q:  Do I have to be subscribed to sfglj or the sfgoth-l mailing list to attend?
A:  Not anymore.  This rule was put in place to help keep the numbers of attendees down when we were in that tiny windmill space.  Our park space is now larger and officially reserved, plus this event has not yet attracted any unwanted attention.  In light of those factors you no longer have to be subscribed to any of the SFGoth mailing lists to attend.  Besides, I'll be too drunk to care.

Q:  I'd like to help offset the costs of the gothnic.  How can I chip in?
A:   The permit this year was only fifty bucks for our space, so if you want to chip in I would suggest contributing in other ways such as bringing games, beach balls, croquet sets, volleyball equipment, soccer balls, whatever you think might contribute to the fun.

Q:  How many people will be there?
A:  Probably upwards of 250 total, but since the event is spread out over a number of hours, you might see 75 or so at one time.

Q:  Can I bring a kite?
A:  Yes, please do!  The field we have reserved is still pretty big, though not as large as the meadow of 99's gothnic.  It is surrounded by a grove of trees and there is a duck pond across the street!

Q:  Are there BBQ facilities?  Should I bring my meat cooked or raw?
A:  There will be two BBQ stands available for our use at the picnic site, as well as four picnic tables.  Bring your own tongs!

Q:  What kind of food should I bring?
A:  There really is no perfect answer.  I haven't made a food list of what everybody is bringing, nor do people know exactly what they have time to make on a Friday night or Saturday morning.  My advice would be to bring something that you enjoy eating that others would probably enjoy eating too.  If you have a special casserole that is to die for, or have a talent for making ghoulish looking cookies then by all means share your culinary gift with us!
